Dead Fairy
We absolutely adore the dark fragility of this dead fairy created by Pirate Monkey Art. Its tiny mummified remains are mounted in a 10” x 8” shadow box display case that opens with a latch and has sawtooth hangers on the back for easy wall display options.
The Las Vegas-based artists behind this beautiful dead fairy are masters of macabre creations, with all kinds of creepy-cool art pieces including a severed finger, a life-size zombie and a vampire skull, to name a few.
Dead fairy art creations have grown in popularity in recent years, a micro art movement perhaps inspired by a mummified fairy made by Dan Baines in what became known as the infamous Derbyshire Mummified Fairy Hoax, aka the dead fairy hoax, carried out on April Fools Day 2007.
British prop and illusion designer Dan Baines shared an image of a tiny fairy corpse photographed against a police evidence bag on April 1, 2007, along with a robust backstory about its origins. The image and story went viral, spawning everything from dead fairy replicas to conspiracy theories.
Even though Baines admitted the whole article was planned and created for April Fool’s Day, the curiosity around the dead fairy hoax still lingers today as do (thankfully) some truly beautiful dead fairy creations, breathing new life into centuries-old folklore around these legendary creatures.
