When we first came across these custom oyster shells featuring US harbors, islands, or ports made by One Red Sail, we knew we had to explore the curious-cool waters of oyster shell art.

Much to our surprise, an entire realm of art is being produced inside these craggy canvases. Everything from sprawling landscape scenes to animals and portraits is painstakingly painted within. These highly polished oyster shells are also composed into sculptures and shadow boxes, decoupaged into ring dishes, repurposed into salt and pepper dishes, and even staged as nativity scenes.

The use of oyster shells in art appears to be growing in popularity, but the practice dates back centuries. One of the earliest examples of oyster shell art comes from ancient Greece where they were used along with stones and other materials to make mosaics.

One of the unique aspects of oyster shell art is that it utilizes a natural resource that is sustainable, with artists transforming what others discard into intricate and curious works of art.
