Zombie fungus, eh? When we first saw this curious specimen by Cave Mans Digs, we knew had to unwrap this curiosity and find out more for ourselves.

Listed as a “parasite mushroom on cicada,” this unique curio is presented in a 4-inch x 1-inch vial. Parasitic mushrooms are a type of fungi that get their nutrition from a living host.

So just what is zombie fungus? If you’re a fan of the hit video game turned HBO series “The Last of Us,” then you are already familiar with this zombie fungus as the culprit behind a mass outbreak that devastates humanity by turning much of its human hosts into, you guessed it, zombies.

And while the premise of the show is entirely fictional, the fungus it’s based on is actually real. Zombie fungus, aka cordyceps, is a legit fungus that can infect insects, even controlling their minds. Spooky stuff. Good news is, it doesn’t currently impact humans and experts don’t expect it to.

We confirmed that this curio specimen is indeed authentic zombie fungus, but for now at least, it won’t turn you into one.
