Mary 29th is National Alligator Day, established by Wild Florida Safari Park in 2021 as an awareness campaign sharing alligators’ importance within the ecosystem.

The American Alligator lurks in freshwater lakes, rivers, springs, and swamps across the southern United States. With their long snouts and protruding gnarly teeth, it’s easy to understand how their creepy appearance could incite fear in some, but there is a lot to admire about these remarkable reptiles.

For starters, alligators are revered by researchers and biologists for their engineering prowess. They dig holes that are used by other aquatic species. They also have pretty savvy problem-solving skills, and their role in the predatory food cycle is vitally important. Without them, there would be a lot fewer birds and more bugs. If you’ve ever spent time in the southern territories of the United States, you already know this would be a huge bummer. Basically, without them we might all be carried off by a cloud of humongous mosquitos, and that just wouldn’t be good.

Plus, they’re curiously old - 150 million years old to be more specific - and they narrowly avoided extinction 65 million years ago. In honor of these oddly awesome creatures, we’re sharing some alligator art to celebrate their unique strangeness.
