Exploding human skull models have an intriguing history that dates back to the early 19th Century with some debate as to the first innovator of this technique. Also known as the Beauchêne skull, named for the French physician who has been credited with inventing the disarticulated or exploding skull, these anatomical models are comprised of 22 bones across the face and cranium that allow medical students to study them in detail.

Today authentic vintage Beauchêne exploded skulls are highly collectible due to their rarity, and even exploded skull models from modern anatomy sellers can be in excess of $1,000 USD.
