Gargoyle Art
When we came across this unique OOAK Gabriel the Gargoyle ceramic sculpture from Pennsylvania-based artist George Thompson of Georges Side Show, we knew we had to see what else was out there in the world of gargoyle art. Turns out, there are some pretty curious creations that are just as fascinating as the ancient creatures from which they are based.
Gargoyles are stone fixtures usually carved with a decorative face and often a full or half-bodied creature such as an animal hybrid, human, or monster that served an architectural purpose to drain water away from a building. Gargoyles are also sometimes called grotesques. The distinction between the two is pretty straightforward. A gargoyle is indeed a functioning waterspout, whereas a grotesque is simply a statue. As they often are fixated on the top of tall buildings, it can be difficult to tell the two apart.
