Graveyard Dirt
WHAT IS GRAVEYARD DIRT?
Did you know you can buy graveyard dirt? Thanks to the prevalence of online shopping, you can purchase hand-collected cemetery dirt - soil ethically sourced (let’s hope) from a gravesite. Why would anyone want this? It’s actually pretty fascinating.
Graveyard dirt has long been used for several ritualistic purposes such as casting spells of protection and love, connecting with ancestors or spirits, and other hoodoo, voodoo, witchy, and spiritual practices.
This dirt can either be authentic (coming from actual graves) or created from a blend of substances such as herbs and plants. If the graveyard dirt is authentic, there are often notes accompanying the product on what “payment” was given or spiritual practices used before the dirt was collected and details about the person or location where it was sourced. Many who collect graveyard dirt leave a payment in the way of an offering such as money, alcohol, or an objective of value at the grave site. Some claim to have visited these sites several times, respectfully attempting to connect with the dead for permission.
Grave dirt is sold in variety of containers from small vials and artfully decorated jars to simple bags labeled “Graveyard Dirt.”
It’s no surprise that the ethics of collecting graveyard dirt is a contentious topic in online forums. Thankfully, those selling these products appear to be transparent about whether the dirt is from a real grave and where, or if it is synthetically created and what it contains.
For those interested in purchasing real graveyard dirt as an addition to a curio collection, we recommend completing your own independent research on the ethics surrounding grave dirt to form your own opinion on what feels best for you.
The particular Graveyard Dirt sample featured above by Mydnny Blu Boho is collected in the town of Cripple Creek, a mysterious mountain town tucked away at nearly 10,000 feet in the Pikes Peak region of Colorado, not far from where we are based.
