Miniature Dioramas
These miniature dioramas by artists from around the world are so intricately and thoughtfully designed that they might rival most modern-day homes for their clever use of space and attention to detail.
Miniature dioramas are an art form that originated in the 18th century. The term itself was later coined by Louis Daguerre, the famous inventor of the daguerreotype, and French painter Charles Marie Bouton in 1822.
These curious three-dimensional models have grown in popularity and sophistication over the last two centuries and are often seen in museums and exhibitions in elaborate displays that have evolved to incorporate lighting, sound effects, and even movement. The Quay Brothers, featured at the MoMa in 2012 and profiled in a 2019 documentary short film by Christopher Nolan, Quay, are just one example of two artists who have cultivated a massive following in this medium with their small and large-scale animated dioramas that are just about as surreal and complex as these displays can get.
