Unique Magnets
When it comes to fun little household gifts, magnets are a go-to easy and inexpensive choice. But what if you could add a unique twist to your collection? These quirky and unconventional magnets feature everything from strange takes on the human anatomy to pop culture food puns. Yep, I’m looking at you, Danny DeCheeto.
Refrigerator magnets have an interesting history that dates back only a handful of decades. William Zimmerman secured the first patent for cartoon fridge magnets in the 1970s, but plastic letters and numbers with a small magnetic strip on the back were already being used in the 60s. Inventor and mold maker Sam Hardcastle is credited with inventing the first classic magnets intended to stick to a fridge independent of the glued-on magnetic strips. He went on to create magnets for the space, travel, tourism, and advertising industries.
Magnets exploded in popularity as educational tools, namely ushering in the practice of magnetic poetry in the 90s. From there, there have been countless iterations of magnets created all across the world, with the world’s largest collection of magnets currently held by Louis J Greenfarb topping out at over 35,000 fridge magnets.
